Cheap Mobile Phones in Kenya: All Under 5k!

Comments Off on Cheap Mobile Phones in Kenya: All Under 5k!

In the past, the term ‘cheap mobile phones’ was usually a warning rather than a tempting proposition. With shoddy build, poor quality, sluggish performance, laughable screen resolution and woeful cameras, a budget smartphone was nothing to count on.

You would window shop in town, looking for an affordable phone but all you find are fake China handsets. On the outside, they look nice. The features specified are everything you are looking for but you can be sure the phone will be dead in a few weeks, if not days. Nothing but a toy.

But this isn’t the past, we are in the present. You don’t need to part with a lot of cash for a decent mobile phone in Kenya. Sure, those headline-grabbing powerhouses such as Samsung Galaxy, iPhone 7, LG G6 and HTC U11 are great, but there’s a lot of cheap but quality stuff going on in the world of cheap mobile phones today.

Buying Cheap Mobile Phones in Kenya

Sure, smartphone innovation is expensive. Most of it is reserved for high-end handsets. There is however such a thing as a good cheap mobile phone. With competition and the entry of new manufacturers into the industry, it has forced prices to go down. Many manufacturers are targeting the African market and are tailoring their products to it. They are making them affordable, durable, with great internet connectivity without compromising on quality.

All those amazing features from the high-end devices are slowly trickling down to budget phones. They may not be as good as the expensive phones, but they get simple tasks done without any hitches.Cheap mobile phones in Kenya can now offer you a lot of value at very minimal cost.

What will you get for your money?

Lower your expectations. If you’re looking for a cheap mobile phone, you have to accept the fact that the manufacturer is going to cut some corners to achieve that low price. You aren’t going to get the same speed, features, and display quality as you might with a phone costing two, three, or even four times the price.

But for 5,000ksh or less, it’s quite possible to buy a phone with a full-HD display, an 8mm metal body, 3G connectivity, with relatively long battery life.

4. Kaduda Smart

cheapest smartphones in kenyacheapest smartphones in kenya

Meet the Kaduda Smart, Telkom’s cheapest smartphone.

Kaduda Smart is made by iTel, another very successful device from the company. According to Telkom Kenya, the Kaduda Smart is basically, a low-cost Android smartphone made by Chinese smartphone maker ZTE.

The Kaduda Smart is both a delight and a deterrent to use. On one hand, it’s easy to setup, the pre loaded browser is fast and it runs on android.

One the other hand, you need a Telkom Kenya SIM card before you can activate the device. The Telkom Kenya SIM has to remain on the device at all times. Although the phone is dual sim so you have the option of using another network, 3G network access is restricted only to SIM 1, the Telkom Kenya SIM slot. That means any other secondary SIM, like say your Safaricom SIM, has to go to the second slot which can only do 2G.

Clearly, Telkom wants you to use the device on its network once you buy it. After all, the aim of launching these devices is to bring business back to Telkom. Telkom has great offers on internet bundles though, so you can still take advantage of that.

Key Features
  • Display Size:4.0-inch Screen
  • Display Type:WVGA Touchscreen
  • OS:Android 5.1 Lollipop
  • Storage:Internal Memory 4GB, 512MB RAM

More, for less!

No, these aren’t the absolute best phones in the Kenya, so you won’t find the top tier gadgets manufacturers have to offer. These are simple but powerful machines that will get a lot done at the least available price. Because you want more for less, right?!

Some of the devices on this list are from unknown companies. Not to say they are of inferior quality. They are new and haven gotten the marketing reach they deserve. Give them a try. Most have a 1 year warranty, so if you have any problems, you can always send them back.

An important point to note is the list has a few phones on offer. So you may want to grab them before the deal ends to avoid paying full price.

Note: Please charge your phone at 100% before initial use.
